A field effect transistor acts as an amplifier, receiving the generated photocurrent from the photodiode. In operation, light from an optical fiber of a particular wavelength is coupled to the photodiode. The photodiode converts optical energy to a photocurrent. The voltage bias on the photodiode is then increased, and the generated photocurrent becomes the gain of the amplifier. The generated photocurrent is proportional to the power of the light received, and the conversion efficiency of the photodiode. Therefore, the power of the received light is detected using a power meter.
